Regular Officer Training Plan ...top

Regular Officer Training Plan The ROTP trains leaders in the Canadian Forces. Successful applicants enter the Canadian Military Colleges (CMCs) as an Officer Cadet, and attend either the Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, or the Royal Military College (RMC) Saint-Jean in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

If there are more applicants to the ROTP than the Colleges can accommodate, or a student’s preferred programme of study is not offered through the CMC system, students may be subsidized to attend another Canadian university.

Royal Military College Saint-Jean – Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. ...top

RMC Saint-Jean ensures the smooth transition of selected officer cadets from high school to university education by providing pre-university, and college-level programmes, as well as the first year of university studies. The programmes are harmonized with those at RMC of Canada and the principles of academics, leadership, athletics and bilingualism are integrated into all aspects of your education.


Preparatory Year

This academic year is designed for students from across Canada who demonstrate strong academic ability but are missing prerequisites for direct admission to First Year. Following successful completion of Prep Year, students typically begin their undergraduate degree at RMC Saint-Jean.

Prep Year is equivalent to grade 12 in most provinces, and the first year of college-level studies (CEGEP) in Quebec. The CEGEP programme is the normal entry point into the Canadian Military Colleges (CMCs) for Quebec high school graduates.


First Year

This academic year is designed to provide the same university-level programmes offered at RMC of Canada. Students who complete First Year at RMC Saint-Jean continue toward an undergraduate degree beginning in the Second Year at RMC of Canada. Those who complete both Prep Year and First Year at RMC Saint-Jean may be eligible to receive a diploma of college studies from the province of Quebec. Each programme is offered in both official languages.

In preparation for continued university studies at RMC of Canada in Kingston, students select either the Social Sciences programme or the Science programme. The two programmes share core courses, and are supplemented with programme-specific courses.

Military Training and Service Commitment ...top

ROTP participants attend university during the school year, and are required to attend Basic Military Officer Qualification course or military training during the summer months.

The first part of the Basic Military Officer Qualification revolves around leadership potential and motivation. The second part focuses on the knowledge and skills necessary to be a leader in the military.

Military training is specific to each job.

Graduates serve a minimum of 5 years in the CF after graduation.

Getting Started ...top

Step 1 is to determine whether or not you meet the basic eligibility requirements of military service. You must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 16 years of age on January 1 in the year the application is made

If you meet the basic requirements, Step 2 is to apply to the CF position of your choice. You can apply either online, in person, or by mail.
